Annie Sloan is the maker of a unique decorative paint called
Chalk Paint®, which she first developed in 1990. Annie named the paint Chalk
Paint® because of its chalky feel, look and absorbency. She has written over 25
books on paint and colour! Annie has a passion for paint, painting furniture,
mixing colours and combining colours.
paul klees influence on annie sloan
Paul Klee really knocks Annie’s socks off! She had
forgotten how much he had influenced her until a recent visit to the Making
Visible Exhibition at Tate Modern (on London’s South Bank). Annie says
“as an artist you need to ‘feed yourself’ and seeing the Klee show spurred her
to produce new pieces AND to think about the nature of colour”.
What’s The Key to Klee?
Klee (1879-1940) was a great colourist and colour
has always made a huge impact on Annie Sloan. It’s his exploration of
colour using squares and rectangles on other background colours that
knocks Annie out!
Learning From a Master of Colour
A watercolour that impacted Annie Sloan the most
was Polyphany (1932, 66.5 x 106 cm) and on seeing it she knew she had to
get home and work something up from this. In this work, he creates layers
and layers of colour using a pattern of squares overlaid with different
coloured dots. It’s all about how colours are affected by the
colours underneath them… how colour works and I’m tremendously interested in
that. This piece made her think she wanted to do something like that, so she
went to work when she got back to the studio and voila! A Klee-coloured
inspired chest of drawers!
Annie Sloan’s Klee-Coloured Chest of
Drawers – Bold & Experimental
Just as Klee would have seen it – you don’t
have to be perfect and precise and that’s what makes it so beautiful. Watch
out for more Paul Klee-inspired pieces from Annie Sloan!
More about Annie Sloan
Annie
Sloan lives and works in Oxford, England with her husband David who runs the
business with her. Annie Sloan is probably the main reason for the painted
furniture revolution through her easy, lively and creative approach to
painting. She has a strong desire to communicate and empower people creatively
which she does through her books, workshops and paint. Annie has been painting
for over 40 years. Annie trained as a painter, but turned to decorative work and understanding colour after university. In 1987 she wrote the phenomenally successful book 'The Complete Book of Decorative Paint Techniques' which was followed by over 20 other books on traditional paints, colours and techniques and has led to total sales of well over 2 million books worldwide in 11 languages. Her latest books are the highly successful 'Creating the French Look' published in April 2008 and 'Quick & Easy Paint Transformations' published in April 2010. In 2000 she set up her shop in Oxford to showcase her Chalk Paint®, run courses, and offer interior design services using her knowledge about colour.
The Annie Sloan Empire covers a mail-order business, website and two shops - one in Spain - to market her paints, courses and books. Annie started developing her own line of paints because she was not happy with those on the market.

Annie Sloan first started teaching decorative painting in 1979 working first with oil paints and traditional marbleising and wood graining techniques. Gradually she worked towards water based products developing her own paints eventually so she could achieve the looks she wanted. Annie Sloan does not teach the public now, so she can concentrate on her books, new developments and her stockists. Most of Annie Sloan’s stockists around the world teach workshops. For more information go to each stockist, their web site and/or their Facebook page for more information on dates and what the offer.
ANNIE SLOAN BOOK AVAILABLE- THE FRENCH LOOK
This is French style in a way you haven't seen before. The French look is simple but the influences are many. Greys, whites and linens with toile de Jouy is the most well-known look but there are also chic and quirky Parisian influences as well as the sunny and bright look from the south. In this book Annie uses her experience as an interior designer to combine the use of paint colour and fabrics to create the French look with 25 easy to follow step by steps.
