Milly’s husband Wimcar Cilliers and Milly who were soul mates from the very start and with their initiative and sense of business, created the well-known landmark close to Machadodorp called Millys.  Here many a visitor refuel, refresh, dine and purchase a great variety of exotic trout and other products.  With their two daughters, Unice-Ann and Diekie, also involved in this strong and famous family business, a recipe of success was created through dedication and diligence from innovation that began forty years ago.  There are so many popular pickles and jams, baked goods and savouries that they make your mouth drool.  Piping hot, fresh baked bread and muffins, moist chocolate cake served with excellent Lavazza coffee, fish cakes and fish pies!

A foodies day dream - good enough to drive an extra hundred miles just to fit in a Millys visit!

Not only has Millys become the specialist and wholesaler of specialty trout products they also serve a delicious and famous lamb curry and an Angus rump beef wrap as well as chicken and venison pie!

WITH THE ADDITION OF ACCOMMODATION & CONFERENCING FACILITIES THERE IS MORE VALUE THAN EVER
Comfortable accommodation overlooks the Millys dam where large Carp fish are seen rising to the surface.  A wonderful country view to behold from the comfortable suites and smaller units which are ideal for representatives and business people.  A huge plus factor is the size of the units which are wheel chair friendly with easy mobility and special wheel chair fittings in the bathroom.

“Milly Cilliers was one of those rare people who left you with a lifelong impression. She had a contagious zest for life, an intriguing character and a studious mind.  Above all she processed an excellent eye and sense for a remarkable and good quality horse.

Milly grew up in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa near the banks of the Elands river valley in the Waterval-Boven district.  She attended a convent primary school in Lydenburg, a small Mpumalanga town at the foothills of the Long Tom Pass.

Milly discovered her affinity for horses at the age 40 when she went for her first riding lesson at well-known endurance rider, Janita Doyer, in the Belfast district of Mpumalanga.  Milly was very grateful for Janita and the Doyer family for introducing her to the riding and helping her to find her feet.

Milly’s two daughters, Unice-Ann and Diekie were in turn introduced to horses by their mother Milly and share the fondest of memories of farm weekends with horses on country trials, bathing in cold rivers and sleeping under the stars.  Milly shared wonderful moments in nature with her children and being in the saddle from seven in the morning until five in the late afternoon, was nothing unusual to them.
The Cilliers daughters, now married, always recalled that Milly was an elegant woman, even on horseback.  She was always neatly dressed and wore her favourite red lipstick, even when she was riding the Fauresmith championships over three days.  Her horses were groomed to perfection and her endurance horses always had the look of show horses.
Milly’s will to succeed, helped her daughters in developing a motivated life with a drive to also succeed in what they do.  Milly’s daughters both confirm the special bond which has developed over the year between their mother and her endurance horses.

Milly’s life has always been busy and challenging.  She ran the stud, developed exquisite recipes for their business, spent time with her family and enjoyed to see her horses compete in different disciplines.  Destiny dealt a cruel blow in when in 2005 Milly was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.  Parkinson’s disease is one of a group of neurological conditions called motor system disorders and the most obvious symptoms are movement-related, which include shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking and gait.  As motor skills decline, simple tasks become more difficult and a Parkinson’s patient may struggle to maintain independence.

Milly’s story is one of inspiration, dedication and success. She has sold five horses to the international market of which the latest was Benham Stings Commander which was sold to Al Shaqab owners in Qatar.  Commander won the 120 km National ride in Qatar in May 2007, he earned a 7th place in the 160 km European Endurance Championships in Portugal in 2007 for the Qatari team and he was the convincing winner in the 100 km National ride in Qatar in January 2008.

“You took my hand and I knew it was shaking; You knew why my heart was breaking.  Our friendship is strong and we’ll get by; I know you’re sad, but please don’t cry.  We’ll fight this through thick and thin; Your help and friendship will see me through; With you by my side, I’ll know what to do.”
Milly expressed her wish to Lizet Kotze to share the above note of appreciation to her husband, her children her family and best friend, Nel van der Brugge. ~ Lizet Kotze, Journalist and Friend of the Late Milly Cilliers

~ Buks Viljoen, July 2012
