South
Africa's best sheep herding dogs and their handlers will be travelling to
Scotland later this year in September. It’s
the first time the country will be represented at the World Sheepdog
Championship.
Having myself reared a Border Collie cross Afghan puppy chosen from a litter of 16, I am familiar with this herding dog breed’s characteristics and have the greatest admiration for these highly intelligent, passionate, protective and loyal working dogs.
They
are called working dogs and if they don’t have a herd of sheep to shepherd and command they pretty
much end up working their owners.
When we moved from Plettenberg Bay to the suburbs of Pietermaritzburg my faithful Border Collie - Benjamin, a cross breed had me on the run in the suburbs with him replacing his daily beach runs and his body surfing through the waves.

In effect, training me from walking around the suburbs to running a 21km marathon. All this, Benjamin, my amazing Border Collie did. Border Collies are really and truly remarkable, beautiful dogs!

Johannesburg's Delta Park, 10km north-west of the city centre, was established in 1934 as a waste water treatment plant. Neglected for over a decade after the facility was relocated in 1963, local nature lover and philanthropist Norman Bloom secured the buildings and the surrounding land for future generations to enjoy.

The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary is the oldest bird sanctuary in Johannesburg
Walking clubs and mountain bikers especially enjoy the park's multitude of trails. Its variety of topographical features include granite outcrops and sloping grasslands as well as a range of both exotic and indigenous plants.
The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary attracts over 180 species of birds, including water fowl, eagles and owls. Although the public does not have access to the sanctuary, birders can use the two hides overlooking the dams. This urban conservancy is also a haven for many species of rodents, insects, reptiles and small mammals, including mongoose, spotted genet and hedgehog.

Park is the ideal place to unwind and recharge your batteries away from
Johannesburg's frenetic pace without leaving the city.
